Photostory Friday - you be the judge

There we were, just minding our own business, when we noticed what we thought was a big hawk in the top of the pine tree. Upon further inspection, we discovered it was not, in fact, a hawk, but something we have NEVER seen around these parts before. A vulture. Or a buzzard. You be the judge and tell me what this is....

Clearly, we do not live in vulture/buzzard country, and I've never actually seen one in person. Honestly, they are ugly as sin and I won't miss seeing them around. Who knows what brings them to my neck of the woods, though.

Personally, I think he read our facebook conversation from last week and just wanted to see this hammer in the tree in person. Maybe it misheard and thought it was a "hamster" in the tree and was looking for a snack? Who knows.

Don't worry, I'll be sure to let you know when and if we ever get that hammer out of the tree (and how).

He didn't stick around long. He was scared off by two other vultures in the willow tree. Nice.

I see a ton of those in rural GA. I think they are vultures but I could be wrong.

That is one butt-ugly, creepy bird.

What you have there is a Turkey Vulture.

Great shot of an ugly bird!

I'm not sure there is anyplace these ugly birds don't live.

You may have seen them before, but flying high and circling. You can tell them from hawks and other birds of pray because the turkey vultures wobble in flight.

Great picture!

Yup Turkey Vulture .... We have so many of them around here we have a day dedicated to them Buzzard Day first weekend in June complete with fun activities and a run up in the nearby state park, Makoshika.

I agree, it's definatly a turkey vulture. They always migrate in huge tornado like flocks this time of year. Or at least they do in my neighborhood. They are really very neat to watch as they let the wind currents carry them along at a leisurely gentle pace.
You sure captured a great shot there!
If you'd like to stop by my blog I'm at Cake Crumbs.

since I'm Heidi's mom I'll just ditto her comments. I too love to watch them float and try to count them before they float out of view. If you want to wander down my road I’m home.

I've never seen one of them up close either! Definitely not photogenic, are they? Great picture though. :o)
