No more teachers, no more books...

Yep, you read that right.

School's. Out. For. Summer.

For me, anyway. The girls have school until the end of the week. The boy is out on Wednesday. It's amazing what the high school will bribe the students with to get them to be on time to school. No finals. Really.

I, as of last Friday, am done for the year.

Exciting, isn't it?

In the meantime...

The girls brought home their school pictures long enough for me to check them out and send them back since I consider myself talented enough to do the very same thing for practically nothing.

I wanted to give my mother in law a new picture for her mantle of all her grandchildren, but thanks to a very ornery mother nature, it just hasn't happened. Instead, we got her a new frame with a drawing of all her grandchildren done by my super talented 14 year old and the promise of a real photograph. Soon.
Rain, and more rain. I went to the doctor for a checkup and the blood tests results said I was severely lacking in Vitamin D3... the vitamin you get from the sun. Really? How could this be?
Ishee discovered baby birds in the lilac bush. I don't think there is a baby in the world quite as ugly as a baby bird. Or is there?

Ishee finally finished her Idaho History Project. It nearly did me in working on this with her, only because she found it much more exciting to hound me about working on it than actually working on it. She decided she couldn't have just a poster board with pictures and the history of the ghost town of Gilmore, she had to have a model, which of course, being the good mom that I am, I helped her make one. She wasn't sure about the strings of glue until I told her they were cobwebs. It is a ghost town after all.

Asparagus thieves...

Well, gang, it's that time of year when the asparagus starts popping it's itty bitty yummy heads through the ground, and the neighbors start showing up in droves to collect it when I'm not looking.

It's hard to believe that there are people gutsy enough to come into MY front yard, and steal my asparagus, but it happens. Regularly.

Now, you've seen my front yard... here's a little reminder in case you've forgotten...
It's big... I admit it. And yes, the asparagus is growing on the other side of the ditch bank, which is just a few feet in front of those four itty bitty trees out front. But it is still MY property, that ditch bank runs through MY grass, I pay taxes on that asparagus! It's MINE. Why do people just assume that it's a free for all?

Can you tell I'm bitter about it?

It's not that we love asparagus. We like asparagus, we like it a lot. We get lots of asparagus. We like to share our asparagus. We like to share our asparagus with people of our choosing, however. Not just any old codger off the street.

One year I even put up a sign that said "please ask before stealing our asparagus." It didn't deter many folks. In fact, one day, my girls came running in the house just sobbing "someone is stealing our asparagus!" My husband walked out and politely asked if they could read. Apparently not. I didn't mind her picking it, one bit, but it would have been nice if she had asked. What did she do? She threw the asparagus on the ground and left. Did you think I lived in a classy neighborhood or what?

I haven't personally witnessed the theivery of asparagus yet this year, but I did go out to pick it on Monday morning after seeing there was massive amounts calling out my name on Sunday afternoon, only to discover that my large asparagus patch was devoid of anything but broken stems. THIEVES!!!

I have a way with vacuums...

25 or so years ago my mom spent an arm and a leg and half a side of beef or something strange like that... on a vacuum. Not just any vacuum. A Kirby. I still remember the day that salesman came to the door. We all sat in the livingroom intrigued by this fabulous machine that was guaranteed to clean anything. He wow'd us with it's awesomeness, and went away with a sale in his pocket. I swear there was a cow involved somewhere in that purchase price, too.

When my parents went on their mission, my new husband and I were left in charge of living in and taking care of their home.... along with my brother and a distant cousin, but that's a whole nother story.

One of the first things I managed to do after mom left was break her prized vacuum. I don't know how I did it. It just ... quit working. I was beside myself. I called up my sister... "what do I do?" I just knew if mom was there, she'd surely flatten me like a pancake.

Luckily, I had a few months, and my husband and I managed to scrape together a few pennies to have the Kirby repaired. I think. Perhaps one of my siblings felt sorry for me and got it fixed. I don't know. All I do know is that 16 years later... that vacuum still works.

In those 16 years, I have singlehandedly managed to kill every vacuum I've ever laid hands on within a few months of taking ownership. It's like I'm vacuum challenged. Seriously. It didn't matter if I paid $50 or $500 for a vacuum. They never lasted long.

When we added on the office to our house four years ago, my dh went out and bought his very own vacuum for his office so he wouldn't have to carry my big heavy hoover out there, and he was determined to be anal about cleanliness in that space. He spent a whopping $35 on the cheapest vacuum he could find and used it a total of ... once?

Then the switch went out in my big beloved hoover. It was my most expensive vacuum to date and no way was I giving up on it just yet. I took it to the local vacuum repair place and he confirmed it was the switch, not a problem, easy, inexpensive fix, I'll order it right now, should be 2-3 days.

Two or three days turned into close to four weeks.

Do you know the kind of damage my kids do to carpet in 2-3 days, let alone four weeks?

Lucky for us, we had a perfectly good like new vacuum in the office just taking up space. It would work for now as much as I didn't want to bring it into the house. I had this feeling once it entered that door, it would never leave.

Two months after getting my beloved Hoover back, the switch went out again. Mr. Vacuum repair man told me this was common as it was a glitch in the Hoover system they had yet to perfect. Great. I hummed and hawed about what to do, take it back in and have another switch put in or say goodbye to my beloved vacuum? It wasn't like I didn't have a perfectly good one sitting right here anyway.

I said goodbye. Actually, I put it in the garage where it sat collecting dust until I gave it a proper goodbye to the local Deseret Industries. Mr. Vacuum repair man told me he enjoyed cruising D.I. for old vacuums to fix up. I should have saved him the time and just given it to him directly, but then I take the fun out of shopping at D.I., now wouldn't it?

Believe it or not... it's been three years now that I've been using this $35 Bissel vacuum. It has a small beater, and the only attachment is about 2 inches wide. I keep telling my husband it would sure be a lot easier to vacuum the furniture if I had an attachment that was more than 2" wide. *hint hint* He tells me just as soon as this vacuum dies, I can have a new one.

Now my husband, when he wanted a new big screen TV, I told him, right after the old one dies, then you can have a new one. It keeled over dead with a massive heart attack a week later! My vacuum... the one thing I've never owned one of for more than roughly 18 months... is going on three years... without so much as a broken belt even!

I've used it daily. I've abused it daily. Yet, it continues to live on.

It's doing this just to spite me.

I'm sure of it.

The San Francisco Project...

The projects of this week have been officially dubbed the San Francisco Projects. My husband doesn't go out of town much any more, but when he does, I like to have projects to keep me busy and make the time go by faster. This week was no exception. Between trips to the store, painting, sewing, new fish, and custom jewelry orders, before I knew it, the week was up.

My husband was not scheduled to be home from his meetings in San Francisco until late this evening and I received word late last night that thanks to the drug Vytorin, he will be home in approximately three hours from now. That means my final project of the week will have to be put on hold until I can find the time to work on it again. Instead, I have to do the one thing I have avoided all week ... and I do mean avoided to the fullest possible extent ... housework!

I won't be sharing those pictures with you as it's just plain embarassing to admit how little I've done in that area. We all have days like that ... I had a week. Do you know the damage three (well, two, my scouter boy doesn't do much damage anymore) children can do in a week? Did you see that episode of My name is Earl the other day where they took Joy's trailer house and rocked it back and forth until it tipped over? I'm not so sure somebody didn't try that to my house when I wasn't looking. I'm not sure how they did it, but I'm pretty confident it happened.

So on that note... thank you for your comments regarding my various projects this week. It was fun to work on them, and fun to share them with you. We will now proceed with our regularly scheduled posting of boring and mindless dribble! Thanks for playing. I'm off to play maid for a few hours!
