Two days later, I got a blue screen of death, something I hadn't seen on this completely problem free thus far laptop that I got last year for Christmas. I was sighing a huge sigh of relief over the fact that I had backed everything up and then spent the next few days creating a multitude of pages for my mom's 80th birthday book.
I was a little leary of that blue screen and decided to back up my computer again last night "just in case". I wouldn't want all that hard work on my mom's book to be a total waste.
So... I clicked back up and I got a major error saying something like "it ain't gonna happen, chicka, until you run a chkdsk scan first!" What the pooh? Seriously! It will save NOTHING until I do this, which will automatically run when I restart my computer. So I restart my computer, and for the next five hours, it runs an eternal chkdsk scan, over and over and over and over. Takes approximately 90minutes to run a scan, and it just kept running the same one. Never ending.
The husband told me to shut the computer off, so I did, hoping this morning it would be back to normal. It's not. Do I really ask too much of it? Apparently I do!
I googled chkdsk to see just what it was (there are some advantages to having several computers in this house), and according to Wikipedia, a chkdsk is the scan it runs right before your hard drive bites the dust. Can you hear me weeping???
I'm just glad everything I've done in the last year is all backed up. Well, except those 45 or so scrapbook pages for my mom's book, which I had set apart the next two days to work hard on.
On the upside, though, since I have adopted that philosophy in life (and kick myself daily for it), my son's new computer he got for Christmas is superbly fast. I wonder if he'd mind if I just took over it? And... I suppose I'll have to find something else to do around here, like clean out the remainder of the kitchen cabinets, paint the trim in the dining room, and scrub toilets.
Who am I kidding?
Edited: Guess what? It finished it's scan and all is well in computer land once again. First thing I did was back up my files I so desperately needed to keep, and now I'm doing a mini happy dance and praying that the other google sites I find that say a chkdsk is actually a "good" thing is RIGHT! Why does everything in our house hate me? I'm starting to get a complex!

Sounds like a fun couple of days. Looks like it all turned out well for you. So far I have now lost almost every picture I have ever taken with a digital camera. I keep all my old burned up hard drives under my pillow at night praying that one day we will be able to recover what is on them. :-)
Yeah, I won't ask to borrow your car or park in your driveway if you keep your awesome modern convenience magnetism away from my house!
You proceeded with my exact tech support recommendations: turn everything off and hope for the best in a few days. Good luck!
