Photostory Friday - sighing over Dexter the Duck...

Bright and early Thursday morning, my mother in law called and said there was a duck in her backyard, would we go out and protect it from the dog (she had to go to work) because it is so tame, it is surely someones pet. Um, sure? I walked out and sure enough, there was a duck and yep, it was tame as could be. But it wasn't just any duck, it was a wounded duck. *sigh*

My husband put on his gloves and picked the poor thing up and moved it over to our back yard where we could keep a better eye on it. We created a puddle of water, and the poor thing limped right in and didn't move the rest of the day. She has a pretty good wound on her back and her foot is all mangled. I called fish and game - and got no answer. *sigh*

The kids - named her Dexter. They tried feeding her bread, lettuce, blueberries, popcorn, and popsicles (my 2 year old visiting niece wanted to feed her "canny", but that was where I had to draw the line). Dexter wasn't interested. *sigh*

Dexter won't make it through the night. She's septic, which could very well explain her tameness. The dogs only stayed away because we made them. The girls are sad, but they also understand that Dexter is sick and is going to die. They just don't know that their dad (or grandpa, I hope) is going to go out and take care of Dexter after they go to bed. It's that or let the dogs have her. I just can't do that to her. Not after all we've been through today. *sigh*

Somedays, life just catches up, and it sucks.

Such sadness in the beauty around us. I bet the kids had a great day with her. Thanks for being so kind and taking her in. Nice people are hard to find. *hugs*

That poor duck and the poor children. What a hard life lesson, but I am sure the duck will feel better....that sounded so lame, but I meant it nicely. Ugh. I'm kind of sick about it and I wasn't even there. Truly heartbreaking.
