White kitchens.
They're everywhere.
And people LOVE them.
They love them so much, they are taking their beautiful wood cabinets and painting them WHITE.
It astounds me.
Perhaps that is because I HAVE a white kitchen.
And I hate it.
So, I have been looking at all these white kitchens, around the internet, on Pinterest, trying to figure out just what it is that people adore about white kitchens and why they so desperately want them.
I don't know what it is.
A few weeks ago, I was visiting one of my most favorite decorating blogs and there it was again, those white kitchens. I left a comment telling her how I had one and I hated it. She emailed me back and said, I checked out your blog, I don't see your kitchen anywhere. That's because ... I don't know why.
SO... to make a long story short... just for you, Decorchick, here is my kitchen.
I actually do love the counterspace, all the cabinets, the 17 drawers, the big island, the bar, the hardware, the tile floor, the brightness of it. I even love the paint color, the stars, and the maple leafs I have stamped on the wall.
But... something just isn't working for me.
The counter tops? Blah.
The backsplash? Boring.
My budget? Doesn't exist.
So, I'm kind of stuck with them.
The view from the living room:
(don't mind the leftover cupcakes on the counter)
The view from the front door:
(love our new silverware from Ikea? Best thing we've ever done!)

The view from the dining room:
(the valances are so faded, they really need replaced)

The view from the corner into the living room:
(anything and everything collects on the bar... like snowcone machines)

The handstamped maple leafs:

There you have it. There is my white kitchen. It will never be the kitchen you'll find people drooling over on Pinterest, like say, all of these... but who doesn't want a beautiful kitchen?
I'm usually just happy if it's clean.

What do you think?

Awwww I think it's gorgeous!!! Why don't you like it?? I understand about the countertops etc as I won't be able to change out mine any time soon either. But I think it looks fab, and you're gonna hate me when I paint mine. Hahaha!
I can see your point. I too am not a fan of all white kitchens. I crave color - can't live without it. I enjoy looking at all white or tone on tone gray/white/taupe rooms - they look very serene. But I could. not. live. there. I must have color! I think we're wired for color - look at nature! Its everywhere! And so beautiful. Your kitchen is beautiful, but you do need some pops of color - maybe get some brightly colored plates/platters and prop them up on top of your cabs/hang them on your backsplash? Get some fun, brightly colored curtains (not just a valance) and hang them at the window...Just a thought...and there is some new countertop paint that you can paint over laminate - get it at Lowe's. Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it! Amy in Austin, TX (aka color junkie) :)
To me white is sanitary looking, I've always leaned towards white kitchens. (Last three houses had some version of it since they both had old cabinets and I didn't want to spend the money on new ones). But when we bought this house (another fixer upper) we knew it would be more than a paint job, i.e. new cabinets. My husband was insistent that we weren't going to pay good money on painted cabinets, so we "compromised" on cherry with a Brandywine stain. Now I am glad we got what we did, they look so rich and the kitchen seems cozy. I still like white kitchens, but like my colorful one too:)
we sure think alike. i love to look at white kitchens but i don't think i would ever be happy with one. have you seen the new kits they have now to paint your old counter tops. you could also glaze your cabinets to give them some warmth and depth. your kitchen is great but i know what you mean about craving color and texture.
I loved white kitchens too until I painted my kitchen white and I hated it. It was constantly covered in dirty finger prints and spills. I like your kitchen though, but I definately understand. I did notice though that all the kitchens you see around are definately staged, there is never anything on the counters which is so not realistic. So if you put everything away that you use a million times a day, maybe you'll like the look better, but then it won't be functional!
I think if it makes you happy it is perfect. I love the hand stamped maple leaves, what a personal touch. I just did my family room in blue and white--blue makes me happy and I love it.
I think your kitchen has so much potential. I love the architecture in the windows. I think if you took the valances down it would accent that even more. You could add some of the same deep red color from the rug on the floor by adding a couple of cool red accents here and there.
You could add a great red piece or two on the window sill and paint the stars over the stove a deep red.
I LOVE the leaves. So cool!
Perhaps more dirty dishes to give it a lived in look, definitely like Amy's comment about some splashes of color. With the basic colors down you can change the color with the season. Come on Sister dear, use that excellent creativity of yours and get busy then come and do my house.
I love your kitchen... especially the maple leaf wall treatment. I've never seen anything like that before. I'd trade my oak cabinets for yours in a skinny minute!
If it were my kitchen... the only think I'd change are the appliances. Too much white. I think stainless would look good and break up some of the white... but I also realize that's not an easy swap. LOL
I agree with the suggestion to take the curtains down, tho... and adding more red accents.
