Why remodeling is just that much harder...

Ya know, when we decided on this whole little remodeling project, it consisted of the removal of a tub, capping off the plumbing, ripping out the carpet, laying down a couple hundred bucks of tile and then fixing the walls, slapping up some paint, and voila, a whole new room.

Then the husband got a bee in his bonnet about ripping out the shower. Honestly, when I posted about this yesterday, I didn't think he was anywhere NEAR serious. I mean, he's not dumb. The more he thought about it, the more he said to himself... "dude, we just did 10 times this much tile work next door, how hard could it possibly be?"

So we went and looked at tile and talked to the slick salesman at the tile store and she convinced us whole heartedly that we could do this! And by this, I mean, rip out the shower and build a new one. We started chanting "we can do it! we can do it! we can do it!" and ordered some tile.

Ha... then we actually STARTED! First we had to take out the old shower, which honestly, how big a deal could it be? Unscrew a few screws and give it a yank. Of coarse, we didn't bother to notice that the doorway was a lot smaller than the shower insert (obviously they built the bathroom around the shower instead of the other way around). Not to mention that this shower was in there tighter than a drum. The easy removal of this shower just got a LOT harder.

It came out in approximately 58 pieces after three hours of hard labor. WHEW!

We then spent the next three hours going around town to find an appropriate drain, which according to Jamaica Bob from Holeshot plumbing who was sitting on the next stool at Falls Plumbing, is going to take us the rest of our lives to fix because we just simply don't know what we are doing, despite the fact that apparently old acquaintance Jim who knows the husband by name but the husband has not clue one who Jim is told us that it would be a piece of cake. We would sure like to believe Jim but I'm thinking Jamaica Bob was more correct. The husband is currently on his fourth trip to town today for the appropriate drain parts!

And this is why remodeling is just that much harder than starting from scratch... the demolition and replacing of previous crap is TORTURE!

Stay tuned as we see just what holds this house together... is it 2x6's? NOPE... 2x4's? Guess again! Try... one by two and a half inchers... really... seriously... a stiff wind would blow this house away! It's just sad.

Oh man, that just makes me queasy! I get all dizzy and confused when I walk into Home Depot, I can't imagine my fourth trip in for drain parts. Lucky your husband has an inkling of what to do. It will be awesome when all is said and done.

I agree on the build new vs. remodel, but it really makes the house that you already love that much sweeter when you accomplish these tasks.

The wallpaper behind the shower is weird to me. I don't know the first thing about building a house, but if they built the room around the shower, then did they wallpaper before they finished off the room? I'm confused, getting dizzy again!

Good luck, update every step of the way, I find it completely fascinating!

What? You think I need a life because someone else's remodel is fascinating?

Okay, here is what you do. Since you have the walls torn up anyway, and you know the way to the plumbing store with your eyes blindfolded, why not put in a second shower head. One for each of you. You would love it. We used one in california and it is on my list of requirement if we ever build again.

You're keeping that wall paper, right?!?

Oh, I'm tired looking at that project.

1 x 2.5? Geez, I'm glad you're not prone to tornados there. If a twister does come along, wave to Dorothy and Toto for me, will ya?

The wallpaper makes me giggle. Just a little. You are so lucky to have a dh who can do this stuff!
